Definition

1). Full stop /period: use of full stop /period at the end of assertive /declarative sentences.

وہ پاکستان واپس آگئے۔

Use of Full stop /period at the end of imperative sentences.

حرکت نہ کریں۔

2). Comma(,): In some places, commas are necessary, and in some places, not necessary but in some places they are optional, use it or not.

میں نے علی، ان کے خاندان، اس کے استاد اور اس کے دوست کو مدعو کیا ہے۔
She bought a book and registered.
اس نے ایک کتاب اور رجسٹر خریدا۔
I met Ali, Asif, Ahmad, and Sami.
میں علی، آصف، احمد اور سمیع سے ملا۔
3). Semi-colon(;): Semi-colon is defined as a weak full stop and a strong comma. A semi-colon indicates a longer pause than a comma does

He proposed us a proposal; we accepted it.
.اس نے ہمیں ایک تجویز پیش کی۔ ہم نے اسے قبول کیا
The roads were bumpy; therefore, we came by train.
.سڑکیں خستہ حال تھیں۔ لہذا، ہم ٹرین کے ذریعے آئے
Their rooms are dirty; their courtyard is clean.
ان کے کمرے گندے ہیں۔ ان کا صحن صاف ہے۔
4). Colon(:): Colon indicates a strong break in a sentence and is used in writing to introduce an explanation /definition, an example, a question of items.
Examples:
I have visited the following countries: America, England, and Japan.
میں نے مندرجہ ذیل ممالک کا دورہ کیا ہے: امریکہ، انگلینڈ اور جاپان۔
They can save themselves: they must surrender.
وہ اپنے آپ کو بچا سکتے ہیں: انہیں ہتھیار ڈالنا ہوں گے۔
One of his saying is: do good, have good.
ان کا ایک قول ہے: اچھا کرو، اچھا کرو۔
5). Apostrophe(‘): The sign (‘), which comes over the lines and over the concerned letters, is used to indicate the plural and possessive forms of words and indicate missing letters and digits.
Examples:
He is Ali’s father.
وہ علی کے والد ہیں۔
This is my uncle’s shop.
یہ میرے چچا کی دکان ہے۔
He has taken his father’s bike.
اس نے اپنے والد کی موٹر سائیکل لے لی ہے۔
6). Question mark(?): It is used at the end of interrogative sentences is called the question marks.
Examples:
Do you live here?
کیا تم یہاں رہتے ہو؟
How are you?
آپ کیسے ہو؟
Where is he from?
وہ کہاں سے ہے؟
7). Exclamation mark(!): The sign which comes at the end of the sentences which expresses a sudden and strong feeling of anger, surprise or joy, is called the exclamation mark.
Examples:
Am I not fit for the job!
!کیا میں اس کام کے لیے موزوں نہیں ہوں
Did they win the match!
!کیا وہ میچ جیت گئے
How can I kill him!
!میں اسے کیسے مار سکتا ہوں
8). Dash(-): Dashes are used informally instead of a colon, semi-colon, a full stop, or commas to express a pause in the continuity of thought in a sentence or shift of flow in a sentence.
Examples:
He was singing – she was laughing at him.
وہ گا رہا تھا – وہ اس پر ہنس رہی تھی۔
I like –flowers , trees and grassy.
مجھے پھول، درخت اور گھاس پسند ہے۔
He said- “come here”.
اس نے کہا- یہاں آؤ۔
9). Hyphen(-): A short line (-) that is used to join or divide a word or two words is called a hyphen. It is also used to separate syllables.
Examples:
Shoe shop or shoe shop.
جوتوں کی دکان یا جوتوں کی دکان۔
Well-wisher or well wisher.
خیر خواہ یا خیر خواہ۔
Clean-shaven or clean shaven.
کلین شیون یا کلین شیون۔
10). Slash (/): This sign is used to separate the alternative words or terms in written English.
Examples:
The term was 1992/93.
مدت 1992/93 تھی۔
Academy is off on Sunday/Monday.
اکیڈمی اتوار/پیر کو چھٹی ہے۔
Autumn is beautiful /summer.
خزاں خوبصورت/گرما ہے۔
11). Stress mark(‘): This sign comes before but over the word which the writer wants the reader to read with stress/force.
Examples:
I ‘will go to Karachi.
میں کراچی جاؤں گا۔
I ‘do like him.
میں اسے پسند کرتا ہوں۔
‘Do bring your book.
’’اپنی کتاب لاؤ۔
12). Parentheses ( ): The sign ( ), which is used to separate unnecessary things in a sentence is called parentheses.
Examples:
We will complete this project within fifteen (15) days.
ہم اس منصوبے کو پندرہ (15) دنوں میں مکمل کر لیں گے۔
He will come within twenty (20) minutes.
وہ بیس (20) منٹ میں آجائے گا۔
