Definition:

A group of words that has a subject and a predicate and forms a sentence or part of a sentence is called a ‘’clause’.

Examples:

I eat bananas.

میں کیلے کھاتا ہوں۔

Ali speaks loudly.

علی اونچی آواز میں بولا۔

There are two kinds of clauses; the first kind is called the main/principal/independent/super-ordinate/matrix clause, and the second kind is called the dependent/sub-ordinate/sub-clause.

Types

1). Independent clause       2). Dependent clause

Independent clause

Independent/principle/main/super-ordinate/matrix clause, which has a subject and a predicate, gives clear and complete sense and can make a sentence by itself.

For examples:

I enjoy sitting by the fireplace and reading.

جھے چمنی کے پاس بیٹھ کر پڑھنا اچھا لگتا ہے۔

Our planets revolve around the sun.

ہمارے سیارے سورج کے گرد گھومتے ہیں۔

Types

  • Declarative/assertive clause
  • Interrogative clause
  • Imperative clause
  • Exclamatory clause
  • Optative clause

Declarative/assertive clause

Those independent clauses which make an affirmative, negative, or emphatic statement are called Declarative/assertive clauses.

 For examples:

We do sit here.

ہم یہیں بیٹھتے ہیں۔

He plays football.

وہ فٹبال کھیلتا ہے.

She does not work hard.

وہ محنت نہیں کرتی۔

Interrogative clause

Those independent clauses which ask questions and end with a question mark are called interrogative clauses.

For Examples:

Where are you going?

آپ کہاں جا رہے ہیں؟

What time is it?

کیا وقت ہوا ہے؟

Do you play cricket?

کیا آپ کرکٹ کھیلتے ہیں؟

Imperative clause

Those independent clauses which contain a command/ request/suggestion or an advice and end with a full stop are called imperative clauses.

For examples:

Close the door.

دروازہ بند کرو.

Please, forgive him.

لیز، اسے معاف کر دیں۔

Let us go to the Bazar.

چلو بازار چلتے ہیں۔

Exclamatory clause

Those independent clauses which express sudden and strong feelings of joy, sorrow, or surprise and end with signs of exclamation are called exclamatory clauses.

What a beautiful bird it is!

!کتنا خوبصورت پرندہ ہے

Alas! He died.

اش! وہ مر گیا۔

Hurrah! We defeated you.

ہراہ! ہم نے تمہیں شکست دی۔

Optative clause

The clause which contains ‘pray’ is called the optative independent clause.

For examples:

May you live long!

!آپ لمبی زندگی دے

May you succeed in your mission!

!آپ اپنے مشن میں کامیاب ہوں

May God help them!

!خدا ان کی مدد کرے

Dependent Clause

Dependent/sub-ordinate/sub/clause, which has a subject and a predicate but it does not give clear and complete sense and it cannot make a sentence by itself but can help to make a sentence when it is part of or joined to an independent clause. The dependent clause usually plays the role of a noun/adjective or an adverb.

For examples:

When the president arrives.

جب صدر آئے گا۔

If you can work on Sundays.

اگر آپ اتوار کو کام کر سکتے ہیں

Whenever you come to visit.

آپ جب بھی ملنے آئیں

 

Dependent clause

Dependent/sub-ordinate/sub-clause, which has a subject and a predicate, but it does not give clear and complete sense and it can’t make a sentence by itself but can help to make a sentence when it is part of or joined to an independent clause.

For examples:

When the president arrives.

جب صدر آئے گا۔

Because I can’t wait for the bus.

کیونکہ میں بس کا انتظار نہیں کر سکتا۔

Adjective /Relative clause

A group of words that has a subject and a predicate and works as an adjective is called adjective / relative clause.

For examples:

She is the girl who we met yesterday.

یہ وہی لڑکی ہے جس سے ہم کل ملے تھے۔

This is the car which/that we were buying.

یہ وہ کار ہے جو ہم خرید رہے تھے۔

This was the house which/that he had burnt.

یہ وہ گھر تھا جسے اس نے جلایا تھا۔

     Adverb clause

It is a group of a word that has a subject and a predicate and works as an adverb.

 For examples:

He works hard (so) that he may/can pass the exam.

وہ سخت محنت کرتا ہے (تاکہ) وہ امتحان پاس کر سکے۔

She run fast (so) that she may/can reach soon.

وہ تیزی سے دوڑتی ہے (تاکہ) وہ جلد پہنچ سکے۔

People take exercise (so) that they may/can remain fit.

لوگ ورزش کرتے ہیں (تاکہ) وہ فٹ رہ سکیں۔

        Noun clause

It is a group of a word that has a subject and a predicate and does the work of a noun is called a noun clause.

For examples:

I think that he is a good teacher.

مجھے لگتا ہے کہ وہ ایک اچھا استاد ہے۔

That Abdul has died is false.

عبدل کی موت جھوٹی ہے۔

That Ahmad wasn’t punished is wonder.

حیرت ہے کہ احمد کو سزا نہیں ہوئی۔

     Comment clause

Comment clause is a small clause, which adds a comment about the independent clause. It means, the speaker expresses his own opinion or feeling by a short expression.

For examples:

You know.

تمہیں معلوم ہے۔

As I /you/he clearly know(s).

جیسا کہ میں/آپ/وہ واضح طور پر جانتا ہے۔

To be honest.

ایماندار ہونا۔

    Participle  clause

A clause in which ” Ing” participle or the past participle is the main word is called participle clause.

For examples:

The man going laughing is our teacher.

نستا ہوا آدمی ہمارا استاد ہے۔

The girl standing near the gate is our class fellow.

گیٹ کے پاس کھڑی لڑکی ہماری کلاس فیلو ہے۔

The car parking under the tree is mine.

دا ان کی مدد کرے!

Elliptical  clause

Those words are necessary for grammatical completion but not for meaning; if such kinds of words is not used in the clause, the clause is called the “elliptical” clause.

For examples:

I don’t believe, he is angry.

میں نہیں مانتا، وہ ناراض ہے۔

She is angry if he is.

.وہ ناراض ہے، اگر وہ ہے

We teach better than they.

ہم ان سے بہتر سکھاتے ہیں۔
