Definition

There are two parts in conditional sentences; one is called if clause or conditional clause and the second is called main clause or result clause. in the if clause/ conditional clause, we say a condition and in the main/result clause, we say the result of said condition. For example;

If clause

If he works hard.

If they played well.

Main clause

He will pass the exam.

They would have won the match.

Note: (i) if clause usually comes first, but the main clause can also come first. If we bring the main clause first, the comma is removed and capital ‘’I’’ of ‘’if’’ change into small ‘’I’ ’for example

Main clause

He will pass the exam.

They would have won the match.

If clause

If he works hard.

If they played well.
