Definition:

A conjunction is a word that joins two sentences or two clauses.

Kinds of conjunction

(1) Co-ordinating conjunction

(2) Subordinating conjunction 

 Co-ordinating conjunction

Coordinating conjunction joins the clauses the equal ranks. There are four kinds of coordinating conjunction.

Kinds of Co-ordinating conjunction

(1) Cumulative conjunction 

 (2)Alternative conjunction 

(3) Adversative conjunction    

(4) Illative conjunction

(1) Cumulative conjunction: cumulative conjunction adds one statement to another.

Examples:   

The rope was thin but it was strong.

رسی پتلی تھی لیکن مضبوط تھی۔

She is poor but she is happy.

وہ غریب ہے لیکن خوش ہے۔

He is hardworking whereas his brother is quite the reverse.

وہ محنتی ہے جبکہ اس کا بھائی بالکل الٹ ہے۔

I teach English and he teaches Arabic.

میں انگریزی پڑھاتا ہوں اور وہ عربی پڑھاتا ہے۔

 (2)Alternative conjunction: It is used to express a choice between alternatives.

Examples:   

Take it or leave it.

.اسے لے لو یا چھوڑ دو

He was neither intelligent nor obedient .

وہ نہ ذہین تھا نہ فرمانبردار۔

Go out otherwise you will be insulted.

باہر جاؤ ورنہ تمہاری توہین ہو گی۔

Either take it or leave it.

یا تو لے لو یا چھوڑ دو۔

 (3)Adversative conjunction: It is expressed the contrast between two statements.

Examples:    

He is lazy but he is intelligent.

وہ سست ہے لیکن وہ ذہین ہے۔

I was angry still I kept quite .

میں غصے میں تھا پھر بھی میں نے کافی برقرار رکھا۔

He was all right only he was tired.

وہ بالکل ٹھیک تھا صرف تھکا ہوا تھا۔

He is lazy but he is intelligent .

وہ سست ہے لیکن وہ ذہین ہے۔

 (4) Illative conjunction:

It is expressed result.

Examples: 

He did not work hard therefore he failed.

اس نے محنت نہیں کی اس لیے وہ ناکام ہو گیا۔

He was a killer therefore he was hanged.

وہ قاتل تھا اس لیے اسے پھانسی دی گئی۔

She work hard therefore she passed the exam.

اس نے سخت محنت کی اس لیے اس نے امتحان پاس کیا۔

He is an intelligent student therefore he gets a position.

(2) Subordinating conjunction:

It joins a clause to another which depends on its full meaning.

(1) Time of subordinating conjunction

     (3) Cause of subordinating conjunction

(4) Result of subordinating conjunction 

  (5) Purpose of subordinating conjunction

  (6) Manner of subordinating conjunction

Conjunctions And Their Types With Urdu To English Examples

(1) Time of subordinating conjunction: It shows the time.

Examples: 

He laughed while he was teaching.

وہ پڑھاتے ہوئے ہنس دیا۔

I saw him before he met them.

میں نے اسے ان سے ملنے سے پہلے دیکھا تھا۔

I will go when he comes.

جب وہ آئے گا میں جاؤں گا۔

I will go as soon as she sings.

جیسے ہی وہ گائے گی میں جاؤں گا۔

(2) Place of subordinating conjunction: It showplace.

Examples:    

Study where people don’t disturb you.

طالعہ کریں جہاں لوگ آپ کو پریشان نہ کریں۔

Go where you want.

جہاں چاہو جاؤ۔

He went whence he has come.

وہ گیا جہاں سے آیا ہے۔

(3) Cause of subordinating conjunction: It expresses cause.

Examples:  

He worked hard because he wanted to get the position.

اس نے سخت محنت کی کیونکہ وہ پوزیشن حاصل کرنا چاہتا تھا۔

I will help them because I like them.

میں ان کی مدد کروں گا کیونکہ میں انہیں پسند کرتا ہوں۔

(4) Result of subordinating conjunction: It expresses result.

Examples:   

He is so good that everybody appreciates him.

وہ اتنا اچھا ہے کہ ہر کوئی اس کی تعریف کرتا ہے۔

He is so weak that he can’t stand.

وہ اتنا کمزور ہے کہ کھڑا نہیں ہو سکتا۔

He is such a good joker that everyone wants to listen to him.

وہ اتنا اچھا جوکر ہے کہ ہر کوئی اسے سننا چاہتا ہے۔

(5)Purpose of subordinating conjunction: It expresses the purpose of doing something or not doing something.

Examples:   

We eat so that we may live.

ہم کھاتے ہیں تاکہ زندہ رہیں۔

I made a hotel so that I could earn money.

میں نے ہوٹل بنایا تاکہ پیسے کما سکوں۔

Bilal works hard in order that he may pass the exam.

(6)Purpose of subordinating conjunction: It expresses the method of happening something.

Examples:     

This food is not cooked as I like.

یہ کھانا میری پسند کے مطابق نہیں پکایا جاتا۔

I will do it as you like.

یسا آپ چاہیں گے میں کروں گا۔

I will teach you as you like.

میں تمہیں جیسا چاہو پڑھاؤں گا۔

(7)Comparison of subordinating conjunction: It expresses the method of happening something.

Examples:  

He is as intelligent as Ahmad.

وہ احمد کی طرح ذہین ہے۔

You were as active as we were.

آپ بھی اتنے ہی متحرک تھے جتنے ہم تھے۔

Ali played as skillfully as Rizwan.

علی نے رضوان کی طرح مہارت سے کھیلا۔

(8)Condition of subordinating conjunction: It expresses the condition.

Examples:              

If they come on time, I will meet them.

اگر وہ وقت پر آئیں تو میں ان سے ملوں گا۔

If he works hard, he will pass the exam.

محنت کرے گا تو امتحان پاس کرے گا۔

Unless they invite me, I won’t go.

.جب تک وہ مجھے مدعو نہیں کریں گے، میں نہیں جاؤں گا
