Used to +IV with Urdu English

Definition

“Used to +IV” is used for those past habits and actions which we don’t do know.

“کو ماضی کی ان حرکات و عادات کو بیان کرنے کیلئے استعمال کرتے ہیں جنہیں اب ہم نہیں دوہراتےUsed to +IV”

Simple

Negative

I used to play football.

Used to be

“Used to be” is used for the past condition or status of a person, a thing, or place.

کو کسی شخص  یا جگہ یا چیز کی ماضی کی حالت بیان کرنے کیلئے استعمال کرتے ہیں۔”Used to be “

Formula:         Subject +used to be +(a-an)+ (adj)+ n+ E.O.P.+. 

For examples:

Quetta used to be a beautiful city.

کوئٹہ ایک خوبصورت شہر ہوا کرتا تھا۔

He used to be a clerk.

وہ ایک کلرک ہوا کرتا تھا۔

It used to be a unique thing.

یہ ایک منفرد چیز ہوتی تھی ۔

Karachi used to be a peaceful city.

کراچی ایک پرامن شہر ہوا کرتا تھا۔

Used to have

“Used to have “ is used for the past property.

کو ہم کسی ماضی کی ملکیت  ظاہر کرنے کیلئے استعمال کرتے ہیںUsed to have

 Formula:            

Subject +used to have +(a-an) (adj)+ (object/comp)

I used to have a parker pen.

میرے پاس ایک پارکر قلم ہوتا تھا۔

She used to have a gun.

میرے پاس ایک بندوق ہوتی تھی۔

He used to have a car.

اس کے پاس ایک گاڑی ہوتی تھی۔

We used to have a flat in Karachi.

Would =Used to

“Would “ can be used like “ used to ” for past habits and ac

 Formula:      

Sub +would +IV+(obj/comp)

Examples:

I would go to school on foot.

میں سکول پیدل جایا کرتا تھا/جاتا تھا۔

She would weep every day.

وہ ہر روز  روتی تھی /رویا کرتی تھی۔

They would fight every day.

وہ روز لڑتے تھے/لڑا کرتے تھے۔

Used to +IV+(obj/comp)

I used to go to school on foot.

میں سکول پیدل جایا کرتا تھا/جاتا تھا۔

Can

Can is a model auxiliary verb; it has a different function; in each function, it has a different meaning; its meaning can be in the present, the past, and the future.

Examples:

I can speak four languages.

میں چار زبانیں بول سکتا ہوں۔

I can read and write English.

میں انگریزی پڑھ اور لکھ سکتا ہوں۔

We can play football.

ہم فٹ بال کھیل سکتے ہیں۔

Can you read English?

ا تم انگریزی پڑھ سکتے ہو؟

Could

Could is a model auxiliary verb; in fact, could is the past form of the can but it is used in the present, the past, and future tenses and it has got many functions; in each function, it has got a different meaning.

 Examples:

He could not come here.

وہ یہاں نہیں آ سکتا تھا۔

They could not defeat us.

وہ ہمیں شکست نہیں دے سکتے تھے۔

Could you type this letter for me?

کیا آپ میرے لیے یہ خط لکھ سکتے ہیں؟

He could have killed him.

وہ اسے مار سکتا تھا۔

May/ Might

Both “may” and might are model auxiliary verbs. They have got different functions; in each function, they have a different meaning. They are often used to express less than 50% certainty, possibility, or probability.

 Examples:

May you pass the exam !/.

یا آپ امتحان پاس کر سکتے ہیں!.

May you live long !/.

آپ کی عمر لمبی ہو!.

They may/might come today!.

وہ آج آ سکتے ہیں!

It may/might rain today!.

Should

Should is model auxiliary verbs; it is used to advise someone to make him realize his responsibility /obligation or duty.

 Examples:

We should respect elders.

ہمیں بزرگوں کا احترام کرنا چاہیے۔

You should help them.

آپ کو ان کی مدد کرنی چاہیے۔

Should we go now?

کیا ہمیں اب جانا چاہیے؟

He should not waste his time.

اسے اپنا وقت ضائع نہیں کرنا چاہیے۔

Ought to

Ought to use in the same way as should is used.

 Examples:

We ought to respect elders.

میں بزرگوں کا احترام کرنا چاہیے۔

You ought to help them.

آپ کو ان کی مدد کرنی چاہیے۔

Ought to we go now?

کیا ہمیں اب جانا چاہیے؟

He ought not to waste his time.

اسے اپنا وقت ضائع نہیں کرنا چاہیے۔

Must

With the help of “must”, we express any strong obligation, strong responsibility, or any strong duty of someone.

 Examples: 

We must help the poor.

ہمیں غریبوں کی مدد کرنی چاہیے۔

We must respect the elders.

ہمیں بڑوں کا احترام کرنا چاہیے۔
